Errors

Errors come back as JSON with one error field, in plain words, and the HTTP status:

HTTP/1.1 429 Too Many Requests
Retry-After: 60

{"error": "over 60 requests a minute for this key", "api_version": "1.4"}
StatusMeansWhat to do
400A bad parameter: a symbol, a date, a number or too many itemsFix the request; not retried
401No key, an unknown, revoked or expired key, or a full key in a web addressCheck the key
403The key may not call this: a widget key off its websites or endpoints, or outside its scopesUse the right key
404Not covered (a symbol the engine doesn't follow) or no such endpointSee /v1/universe
405Not a GET: the API is read-onlyUse GET
429Over the key's requests a minute, or the month's checks and your prepaid credit used upWait for Retry-After, or top up
503The history isn't available yet (a new server)Retry later, with backoff

Refused calls are never counted against your plan. Retry only 429 and 5xx, with backoff; a 4xx other than 429 will fail the same way again.
